Thrive TRM and Loxo solve different problems for a boutique search firm. Thrive TRM is a relationship system for executive search: it is built to reuse the network, research and search history a firm already holds, and to show a client a branded slate. Loxo is a recruiting platform that bundles an ATS, a CRM, its own talent graph of 850M+ professionals and AI agents that source and contact candidates. Choose Thrive if your firm wins on who it already knows and runs mostly retained, senior mandates. Choose Loxo if your bottleneck is finding and reaching people, or if you run retained and contingency work on the same desk.
That is the answer. The rest of this page compares the two on the work a boutique actually does, from the market map to the client update, then sets out what each costs, what the contracts say and how to test both on a real mandate. Topliner competes with both, and this page says so.
Key takeaways
- Loxo publishes a price as of October 2026: Core starts at $149 per user per month, billed annually and paid up front. Its help centre says the prices shown are promotional first-year prices for new customers, and that accounts revert to the current list price at renewal unless the agreement says otherwise.
- Thrive does not publish a price. Its standard platform agreement bills subscription fees annually in advance and caps renewal increases at the greater of 5% or US CPI-U.
- Notice periods differ. Thrive needs written notice at least 90 days before the term ends; Loxo needs at least 30 days before the renewal date. Both renew automatically for a term of the same length.
- Loxo brings its own data: Loxo Source and the AI agents sit on the Professional plan, with 2,500 credits per seat per month. Thrive brings no profile database of its own; its intelligence is the firm's own network and past work.
- This page is for retained and boutique search firms, and recruiters going independent, who have Thrive and Loxo on the same shortlist.

Where is Thrive TRM stronger?
Thrive is stronger when the firm's edge is the network it already has. It turns relationships, research, search history and market context into one body of talent intelligence, and it is built around the senior search project rather than the job requisition.
- The kickoff. In Thrive's own demo, a partner pastes the kickoff call transcript and Thrive drafts the position description, pitch sheet, scorecard and a three-step outreach sequence in the firm's templates and branding, then turns the call into search signals the partner can edit.
- The map. Thrive maps the market by company, showing the current leader and the alumni who held the role at each target, and marks who the team has already contacted. That answers the client's coverage question from the firm's own history.
- Off-limits. Thrive records why someone is off-limits, who set it, when it starts and when it ends, and keeps the history. Admins define the reasons and switch them on and off.
- The client. A partner can preview a client-ready slate in the firm's branding, or invite the client into a separate view with private notes kept back. Permission settings hide candidates the team is not ready to share.
- The inbox. Outreach from Gmail and Outlook is logged against contacts and active searches, and LinkedIn opens inside Thrive with InMails logged.
The trade-off is data and price transparency. Thrive has no profile database of its own, so the map is only as good as the network and research the firm feeds it, and a buyer gets no figure without a demo.
Where is Loxo stronger?
Loxo is stronger when the bottleneck is finding and reaching people. It replaces a separate ATS, CRM, sourcing tool, outreach tool and contact-data tool with one bill.
- The data. Loxo Source is a graph of 850M+ professionals, searched together with the firm's private database. Contact details come with the shortlist when they are available.
- The agents. On the Professional plan, agents take the intake, write the job description, screen up to 10,000 candidates for a longlist, rank a shortlist across seven dimensions with evidence, and run outreach. Loxo says the agents work autonomously up to the shortlist and stop before the decision, which stays with the recruiter.
- The client update. Every job has a Candidate Status Report, a branded PDF built from the live pipeline, for clients who will not log into a portal. The Hiring Manager Portal adds a live view where admins choose which stages, fields and scorecards the client sees.
- The mixed desk. Loxo sells to direct-hire agencies and executive search firms alike, so one desk can run both kinds of work, and confidential jobs are included on every plan.
The trade-off is that Loxo is built around the job and the pipeline, not the search firm's relationships. Its standard block stops outreach to a person or a client company, with an optional end date; Loxo says the finer off-limits rules retained firms need, by client, entity and engagement, are supported in its enterprise configuration. Check which plan your firm would be on.
What do Thrive TRM and Loxo cost, and what do the contracts say?
Loxo publishes a starting price and Thrive does not. Read the terms as closely as the price, because both renew on their own.
| Area | Thrive TRM | Loxo |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Quoted on an order form after a demo | Core from $149 per user per month, billed annually; Professional and Enterprise quoted |
| Billing | Subscription billed annually in advance; professional services billed in advance | Annual plans paid up front; month-to-month plans exist for online sign-ups |
| Renewal | Renews automatically for a term of the same length | Renews automatically for the same term |
| Notice to leave | At least 90 days before the term ends | At least 30 days before the renewal date |
| Price at renewal | Increase capped at the greater of 5% or CPI-U, with 60 days' notice | Promotional first-year price reverts to the current list price |
| Migration | Implementation, training and data inputting are professional services on the order | Free for Core teams of 3+ seats; Professional and Enterprise migrations quoted as fixed packages |
| Leaving | A CSV copy of the latest backup within 30 days of termination, once Thrive's reasonable costs are paid | Ask for the export terms in writing before you sign |
Two points matter most for a boutique. First, the Loxo figure most buyers compare is the Core seat, but the talent graph and the agents, which are the reason most firms look at Loxo, are on Professional, which is quoted. Price the plan you would actually run. Second, Thrive's fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable under its standard agreement, so the notice date is the real exit; put it in the diary on the day you sign.
Where does Topliner fit?
Topliner is an executive search OS for independent and boutique retained firms: research, ATS and CRM on one record, in the browser. We compete with both Thrive and Loxo, which is why this page sticks to what each vendor publishes.
Topliner sits between the two. Like Thrive, it is built around the retained search project, with the mandate, the market map and the client update on the same record. Like Loxo, it brings its own data: the research platform holds 2.6M+ executive profiles and 234K+ companies as of October 2026, and 1,200+ executive searches have run on it. Topliner is not sold per seat. It works with independent firms as a partnership, on a revenue share, by invitation.
If your firm wins on a network it has spent twenty years building and has no gap in its data, Thrive may be the better fit, and we would rather you knew that before a call.
How should you test Thrive TRM and Loxo?
Run one sanitised past mandate through both under a code name, on the plan you would actually buy, and compare them with how the search really ran.
- Paste the kickoff notes and check what each system drafts: the position description, the scorecard and the outreach.
- Build the map for 20 target companies. Note how many current leaders and alumni each finds, and how many your firm already knew.
- Mark a current client off-limits with an end date, then try to add one of its executives to the new search and to an outreach campaign.
- Share the longlist with a client contact. Check what they see, what stays private and whether their access costs extra.
- Produce the weekly client update from the live record, without retyping.
- Get the terms in writing: contract length, notice period, renewal increases, minimum seats, migration cost and a full export of people, companies, projects, notes and documents.
The full list of questions to ask any vendor is in how to choose executive search software. If neither fits, the wider field is in best executive search software, and the search-native options are compared in Clockwork Recruiting alternatives.
